Peggy Fox, a 72-year-old widow, was diagnosed four years ago with Wegener's granulomatosis, a disease that attacks the patient's internal organs. After experiencing a stroke with convulsions and kidney failure, she began dialysis three times a week through a graft in her right arm.
Recently, a persistent, low fever landed her in the hospital seven times in 10 months. “I am sick of the hospital,” she says.
So when Mrs. Fox’s physician determined that a balloon angioplasty was needed to keep her vascular access open, she was relieved when she was advised to have the procedure done at the Advanced Vascular Care Center. The completely renovated outpatient facility, which is dedicated solely to access care, was conveniently located in Brighton not far from her home in Brookline. It offers free, on-site parking, experienced Beth Israel Deaconess physicians and the latest technology. She got her appointment right away, and was in and out in 2 hours – half the time it took to have the procedure in the hospital.
At the Advanced Vascular Care Center, she appreciated “the quickness and the individual attention. You don’t have 20 nurses coming back and forth and asking questions.” The Center’s nurse was “wonderful,” she says. “This was extra care.”
If Mrs. Fox needs another intervention, she plans to return to the Advanced Vascular Care Center. “You feel like a healthy person going to an appointment,” she says, “instead of a sick person going to the hospital.”
